Hasbro Kenner Classics The Real Ghostbusters Ecto-Glow Heroes Collector's Set Unboxing Review

Hasbro recently released the Kenner Classics The Real Ghostbusters Ecto-Glow Heroes Collector's Set. Read on to find out more about it...

Before I get into this, I would like to send a HUGE THANK YOU to all of the Spook Central VIPs for providing the funds that allowed me to buy this item and review it for all of you. This item was NOT provided by the manufacturer.

Hasbro released the Kenner Classics The Real Ghostbusters Ecto-Glow Heroes Collector's Set at San Diego Comic Con in late July and through its website in early August, where it is priced at $79.99 (plus tax). It consists of four individually-packaged figures, roughly $20 each, that are re-creations of the original Kenner Ecto-Glow figures that were barely released in 1991. The set consists of Peter, Ray, Egon, and Winston; Louis Tully is not included, but may be released later on by himself.

What follows is a photographic "unboxing" review. All images can be clicked on for full size. I'll try to make this quick, but I have a tendency of being detailed, whether I'm trying to or not. I'll start by showing how the package from Hasbro was delivered to me by FedEx on August 14, 2025. My heart sank as much as the box when I saw how concave it was. This reminded me of the time I spied a UPS driver in the back of his truck literally sitting on packages as if they were a stool. I wonder if that's what the FedEx driver did here. (Despite being label as FedEx SmartPost, which means FedEx hands it off to USPS for delivery, it was delivered by FedEx itself.)

Thankfully, the shipping box was much bigger than the item inside, so the figure box was unharmed. The four figures are packaged inside a box that measures 8.5" x 12" x 3" that says "The Real Ghostbusters Ecto-Glow Heroes Collector's Set" on the front with re-created artwork by illustrator Harry Moore.

The left side of the box features illustrations of the four companion ghosts: Gulper Ghost, Wrapper Ghost, Jail Jaw Ghost, and Arachnid Ghost. The latter was named "Spider Ghost" in the original Peter figure release. I wonder why it got a name change here. Could a certain friendly neighborhood wall-crawler be the reason?

The back of the box runs down all of our heroes on the left, while a "This Room Protected by The Real Ghostbusters" door hanger appears on the right.

The right side has close-ups of our four heroes: Ray, Winston, Egon, and Peter. The artwork is the same as on the individual figure cards.

The top of the box has the product title.

The bottom of the box has nothing but the UPC bar code.

Opening up the box, we see the bottoms of boots and a little white paper that is the "Small Parts Warning".

Sliding them out, we see that all four guys are sandwiched together.

Fully out of the box, we see that all four figures are individually carded with the packaging design meant to replicate the originals as close as possible within current legal regulations. Each figure comes with a mask, a Proton Pack with wand and stream, and a companion ghost; all of which glow-in-the-dark.

The backs feature instructions on how to use the toy, a photo of the whole set, and a little profile card to be cut-out (as if anyone is really going to do that).

It's important to note that all four cards are UNPUNCHED. These were never hung on pegs :-)

Of course they weren't, as they're labeled "PART OF A SET. NOT LABELED FOR INDIVIDUAL SALE." This is why there is no UPC bar code on any of the individual cards; just the outer box.

A nice group Ecto-Glow photo.

All four profile cards.

The artwork by Harry Moore is meant to be as close to the originals as possible.

That includes re-creating Egon's wonky hand.

All four figures glow-in-the-dark, as seen in this promo image.

Well, the Ecto-Glow figures are back for those who never got them in 1991, and they're just as gaudy-looking as ever. Oh, the look of these figures definitely screams "EARLY 1990s!". That kinda gives them their charm. So, if you haven't already nabbed a set, grab them from Hasbro's website right now BEFORE THEY GO OUT OF STOCK AGAIN! Don't pay eBay scalper prices for this $79.99 figure set.

Hasbro is planning other Ecto-Glow offerings, most of which were not part of the original toyline. An Ecto-Glow Ecto-1 can be pre-ordered right now for $49.99 with an estimate ship date of February 2026. As can be seen in these convention photos, Ecto-Glow versions of the original Stay Puft and Slimer toys are in the works, due for release in Fall 2025. They will be followed by the Ecto-Glow Louis Tully figure and the unreleased Glow Copter sometime in 2026.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of applying the tacky Ecto-Glow design to the other toys, which are really just a re-use of the sculpts Hasbro already has done. That's cheap and lazy. I would much rather see Hasbro create NEW toys for wide retail release. We still don't have Plasma Series figures of Gary, Callie, and Garraka. An Orb replica, with moving parts, would be really cool. There are so many possibilities, especially since there were ZERO toys released with Frozen Empire last year. (I'm not counting the kids toys released a few months before the movie in a "came and went" fashion.) Yet all we are getting are elitist exclusives for the Haslab crowdfunding campaign and the Hasbro Pulse website.
