Hasbro's Ghostbusters Plasma Series Proton Pack (1984) has recently started shipping out to customers. I got mine today, and took photos as I unboxed it. Read on to learn more about it...

Before I get into this, I would like to send a HUGE THANK YOU to all of the Spook Central VIPs for providing the funds that allowed me to buy this item and review it for all of you. This item was NOT provided by the manufacturer.

Now, this is going to be more of a photo diary type of thing than a traditional review. I won't go over any of the features and will only provide minimal text between photos. To get a good idea as to what this item can do, here is the official product description.
Gear up for supernatural excitement with the Ghostbusters Plasma Series Proton Pack (1984) from Hasbro! Featuring premium, classic-inspired design and detailing, this 1:1-scale role play toy re-creates the original Proton Pack, as seen in 1984's Ghostbusters. With 25 LEDs and SFX from the movie, fans can experience what it feels like to be a pack-wielding member of the Ghostbusters! Other cool features include a removable cyclotron, USB-C power supply option, and removable ribbon cable.
  • PROTON PACK (1984): Celebrate the supernatural start of this frightfully funny franchise with the Ghostbusters Plasma Series Proton Pack (1984), which makes the perfect addition to any Ghotbusters costume
  • CLASSIC-INSPIRED DESIGN: Inspired by the original Ghostbusters, this 1:1-scale toy Proton Pack features premium design and detailing, capturing the aesthetic of the original, 1984 unlicensed nuclear accelerators
  • ELECTRONIC LIGHTS & SFX: Imagine gearing up for the inaugural bust with this Ghostbusters role play collectible, featuring SFX from the movie and 25 LEDs
  • REMOVABLE CYCLOTRON: The Plasma Series Proton Pack (1984) features a removable cyclotron, so fans can imagine tinkering inside and making upgrades, just like Egon Spengler
  • PLASMA SERIES COMPATIBLE: The Proton Pack (1984) is compatible with the Ghostbusters Plasma Series Spengler's Neutrona Wand and the Neutrona Wand (1984) (Sold separately. Subject to availability.)
  • USB-C POWER OPTION: The included USB power option, which removes all timeouts, plays lights and sounds until the user powers off the pack, as well as allows the Neutrona Wand to wake the pack at any time, when the Wand Detect feature is running
The box was shipped from Hasbro's warehouse in Midway, Georgia and took just two to three days to travel to New York.

The Hasbro-branded shipping box gives the Proton Pack the code name "Lockjaw".

Image

Conveniently, the shipping box states its own size (33"x20"x12") and weight (27 lbs). A friend, who lives overseas, is having his pack sent to me so I can re-ship it to him. Thankfully, with the stats listed on the box, I have no doubt as to what postage rates to look up for him.

Image

Open the shipping box and there's an unbranded cardboard box inside, with protective plastic padding on all eight of its corners. This second box measures 31"x19"x11" (approx.).

Image

Inside the second box is the Proton Pack's packaging.

Image

That packaging is meant to look like a storage locker, with faux stickers.

Image

Around the box is a paperboard wrap...

Image

...that has the product details on it.

Image

There's nothing on the bottom of the box, other than most of the adhesive seals.

Image

When the wrap is taken off, the box has the appearance of rusted metal.

Image

This box opens from the side, and inside we can see the pack and some protective "egg carton" material.

Image

Pulling that out, there's a square cardboard box that sits in a groove atop it.

Image

Inside that small box are the instructions, stickers, legal notices, connector hose, straps, and other bits and bobs.

Image

Yeah, you'd think for $300, the pack's labels would all be printed on the thing and not stickers that you have to put on yourself.

Image

The instructions are four pages long, though the first page is just the cover. Here we see the inner two pages.

Image

This is the back page.

Image

The connector hose and straps.

Image

The pack itself comes wrapped in plastic.

If you don't already know, this isn't a "complete" pack. It is missing the Neutrona Wand, which is sold separately for $124.99. Hasbro should have offered a "bundle" option to have the pack and wand together, since they're pretty useless separately. Sadly, the 1984-style wand that, aesthetically, pairs with this 1984-style pack is currently out of stock.

A few years ago, Hasbro released a Neutrona Wand, and later a Proton Pack (via Haslab), that are modeled after the old and worn unit created by Egon Spengler in Afterlife. I have that wand, and it will (supposedly) work with this 1984-style pack, but they are aesthetically different, which doesn't make them an ideal pairing.

My "Spengler's Neutrona Wand", which I reviewed here, is currently packed away in storage, so this is as far as I can go with this Proton Pack right now. There is no point in removing the plastic or undoing anything else. So, here are stock photos of the front and back.

While the 1984-Style Neutrona Wand is out of stock, the 1984-Style Proton Pack is readily available (as of this writing) direct from Hasbro. It is priced at $299.99, with free shipping. With $25.87 in New York sales tax, mine cost me a total of $325.86. If you don't already have either of the Neutrona Wands, you won't be able to do much with the Proton Pack, unless you want to buy it now and put it away for future use, should the wand come back in stock or the fan community provides some options.
