Return of Shot on Site Summer - Ghostbusters 2016 Locations, Part 4 (Movie Rundown)
By Paul Rudoff on Jun. 24, 2018 at 12:00 PM , Categories: Filming Locations, The 2016 Parody Remake , Tags: gb2016locations
Welcome to Spook Central's continuing Return of Shot on Site Summer event wherein we take a look at all of the filming locations for Paul Feig's 2016 Ghostbusters (aka Ghostbusters: Answer The Call). Every Sunday - henceforth dubbed Shot on Site Sundays - at Noon (Eastern) for several weeks (all parts available here in reverse order), we will go through the entire movie from start to finish telling and showing you where everything was filmed in or around Boston, Massachusetts; with a great deal of quick shots in Manhattan, New York; and one spot in Los Angeles, California. We will be utilizing the Theatrical and Extended cuts of the movie from the Blu-ray, as that provides the most locations than just the Theatrical Cut alone. With that in mind, SPOILER WARNING if you read any further... though I suspect that whomever wants to see the movie already has, and those who want to avoid it won't care. Those in the latter camp have probably stopped reading this post already. That's cool. There's lots of material on Spook Central about the original movies and animated series for you to look at.
The majority of locations were identified and researched by Matthew Jordan back in 2016, way before anyone else did it. Secondary thanks go to all of the fine folks on the internet who documented the filming of the movie in 2015, which helped in Matt's research. A few locations were identified by me (Paul Rudoff) and MrMichaelT. The title graphic seen at the top was created by Matthew Jordan, based on an idea by Paul Rudoff. Now that that's out of the way, let us continue...
When we last left our would-be heroes, they were endlessly driving to the Stonebrook Theater. Now they around the corner by a familiar archway.
Yes, that's the Manhattan Municipal Building at 1 Centre Street in Manhattan, which was used as the City Hall Loading Dock in the original Ghostbusters film. It's actually right down the block from a new location, which we'll get to soon.
They race a train to the Stonebrook.
They're on Broadway passing West 133rd Street. This is believed to be the farthest north in Manhattan that they ever shot in any of the three Ghostbusters films.
Cruising down the FDR Drive.
This spot on the FDR Drive (in Manhattan) relates to the spot in the original Ghostbusters where Ray and Winston were driving at night and discussing the end of the world. I'll try to explain this without a whole bunch of arrows and diagrams. In the image above, you'll see some yellow barrels on the left side. Those are placed where an exit ramp is. That exit ramp ends at street level at the spot where Ray and Winston started driving. Today, that side road has been replaced with a park, so the ramp takes you to the traffic light at the adjacent road. I have to think that the Ghostbusters 2016 filmmakers read Spook Central's coverage of this spot and chose to film there. I don't think it's a coincidence that, of all of the places on the FDR drive they could have used, they chose that spot.
They round the corner in front of a New York City landmark guarded by two lions.
If you're on this site, you undoubtedly recognize the New York Public Library, Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, on Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street in Manhattan. I heard that some other bunch of spook chasers had an investigation here. This crew are turning onto East 41st Street.
They finally arrive at the Stonebrook, and go inside to see the manager.
This is the lobby of the previously-mentioned Wang Theater
The ladies head into the bowels of the building to find the ghost that's causing all of the mayhem.
Again, this is all inside the previously-mentioned Wang Theater. They filmed in various halls and rooms, and I will cover a few of them only because I found photos! The first interesting thing to note is that the area where they first descent to the lower level (first shot above) was reused for a later shot when the Mayhem ghost ascends from below (second image). If you look at the extreme left of the second image above you see a tiny bit of the horse from the poster in the first image.
They talk with the manager once they get downstairs.
That spot can be seen in the photo below.
Erin "wiigs" out upon seeing Jillian in a dressing room.
That spot can be seen in the photo below.
Abby investigates a strange noise coming from a room.
That spot can be seen in the photo below.
Do the ladies ever find their way out of the bowels of the Stonebrook? Find out next week - same ghost time, same ghost channel - when we continue our look at the filming locations from Ghostbusters (2016).
