[VIP] Spook Central VIP Exclusives 2022 Schedule - The Real Ghostbusters Alternate Audio Tracks

In 2019 and 2020, the Spook Central VIPs were given a lot of exclusive content as a thank you for supporting Spook Central. That continued in 2021 with the Disc Preservation Project and some The Real Ghostbusters episode scripts. For 2022, I will stay on theme with The Real Ghostbusters, providing all of the supporters with the audio tracks from the alternate episodes of The Real Ghostbusters.

As everyone knows, TimeLife released The Real Ghostbusters: The Complete Collection DVD box set in 2008. It was a great set, but there was a lot of room for improvement. One area where the set is lacking is the lack of alternate episodes. Those are mainly earlier episodes in which Dave Coulier and Kath Soucie have redubbed the voices of Peter and Janine, in place of Lorenzo Music and Laura Summer. There are some in which the background music for one scene is different, either using a piece of the Shuky/Levy score or a pop song by Tahiti. Most of the alternate music episodes can be found on official DVD or VHS releases, but only one redubbed episode has ever been officially released on home video. ("Slimer, Is That You?" can be found on Sony's Volume 7 DVD, so it will not be included here.)

Ten years ago, I had the idea to create a "Supplement DVD" containing all of the alternate episodes and materials that were not included in the TimeLife set. This project would also gather up those alternate music episodes from the assortment of other official DVDs and VHS tapes. (Every official release containing an alternate is listed on the alternate episodes page.) In regards to the redubbed episodes, my plan was to pull the audio off of the VHS recordings of the ABC broadcasts and marry it to the higher-quality video from the TimeLife DVDs. I managed to get a handful of episodes transferred to the computer before Hurricane Sandy destroyed my RGB tape collection in October 2012.

I transferred the audio from two different VHS recordings; one done by Sheila Paulson, and the other done by the late, great Doreen Mulman. I saved my raw "VHS rips" as lossless .flac files, but the transfers are far from perfect due to the source material. Some transfers were done with the VCR set to Hi-Fi Stereo, and the other is the same tape with the output set to Mono. The hifi stereo audio has better quality, but it also contains crackles from tape tracking. Mono doesn't have the crackles, but gains heavy tape hiss and lacks the fidelity of the stereo.

What I am providing to the VIPs is, pretty much, all that I have remaining for the redubbed stuff. After settling in my new home, I was able to salvage some of the damaged tapes by copying them to brand-new VHS tapes using a few scrap VCRs I bought at yard sales. However, my equipment right now is not the greatest, so I can't do any better transfers with those new tapes; assuming anything better even could be done. The stuff I'm providing is very much UNFINISHED. I never got around to doing anything with it, such as attempting to clean up the audio. If you can do something with it, go right ahead. Just share a copy of the finished thing with me.

The first Sunday of every month will see a new lossless .flac format audio file containing the full redubbed audio track (for music and others, only the differing scene will be provided) for an episode of The Real Ghostbusters, while the third Sunday will see the release of a video file created by John Seitz that marries the redubbed audio to cleaned-up video.   This version came from a work-in-progress VHS I got from the late, great Doreen Mulman. Thanks to John Seitz, it has been restored, preserving the original WIP title card, while adding the final episode title card, and pairing the audio to the final episode video.
