MJ Holding Company Walmart Wrestling Mystery Repack Box Review Break

Surprise, surprise. I'm writing about another mystery repack box, but this time it's not from The Fairfield Company. This one is from the MJ Holding Company, LLC (in Bedford Park, IL), and it's apparently a Walmart-exclusive. The "Wrestling Mystery Box" (not to be confused with the Fairfield box of the same name), which sells for the high price of $19.99, contains "5 factory sealed fat packs & 4 regular packs" with "hits seeded 1:4 boxes!" I bought THREE of these things. Yeah, I know, what was I thinking?!? Was my $60 well spent? Read on to find out...
The large 5.25"x6.75"x3.5" box makes it seem like there's a treasure trove inside. Honestly, everything easily fits in half the space. The oversized box is just to make you think you're getting more than you really are. A cheap, but common, marketing trick. What exactly are you getting for $20? Well, each of the three boxes contained nearly the same packs.
- 1 Topps WWE Then Now Forever 2016 21-Card Fat Pack
- 1 Topps WWE Heritage 2016 16-Card Fat Pack
- 1 Topps WWE Heritage 2017 16-Card Fat Pack
- 1 Topps WWE Women's Division 2017 21-Card Fat Pack (box #3 had a second Then Now Forever 2016 fat pack in place of this)
- 1 Topps WWE 2017 21-Card Fat Pack
- 1 Topps WWE Road To Wrestlemania 2016 7-Card Regular Pack
- 3 Topps WWE Then Now Forever 2017 7-Card Regular Packs
It's hard not to notice that autographed cards are plastered all over that box. You'd almost think that you were getting a bunch of them in every box. That's what MJ Holding wants you to think. Looking at the small red splash nearly hidden on the corner of one side, you'll learn that "hits seeded 1:4 boxes" That means that you'll find a "hit" (special card) in 1 out of every 4 of these boxes. That was the reason I bought 3 of them. I figured that MJ sells them to Walmart in groups of four, and someone bought one already, so I'd likely get something in one of these three boxes.
My line of thinking was correct, but I did not get an autograph card as "promised" on the box. The very first box I opened contained an individually-sealed Dean Ambrose shirt relic card from the Topps Best of WWE 2013 series. Seeing this, my heart sank. I already have a dozen different costume and ring canvas relic cards from various sets over the past 15-20 years, some going back to the days when Fleer was publishing cards for WWE. They're usually what you find in those 10-Pack + 1-Relic Card Blaster Boxes that Topps themselves sells for $19.99 in Target and Walmart. They're so common and mass-produced, that they're nothing "special" anymore.
I wonder if MJ Holding can be sued for false advertising. Every "hit" shown on the box is an autograph of some sort, which implies that that's the hit you will find inside the one in four boxes. Nowhere do they show any other hits, which could inform the buyer that they may receive a costume or canvas relic card (or some other non-autograph hit). I'm quite positive that you will NEVER FIND AN AUTOGRAPH CARD IN ANY OF THESE BOXES! I'd love for MJ to prove me wrong, but I'm not wasting any more of my money on these boxes to find out.
Had I known, for sure, that I would find the "hit" in the first box I opened, and nothing important in the other two, I would have left the others sealed and returned them to Walmart with my receipt. At least I would have gotten $40 back and only been out $20, the same cost of a blaster box. I would have been better off buying the two Women's Division 2018 blaster boxes that Walmart also had, for $20 each, than all three of these MJ Holding Mystery Boxes. That way I would have spent less money, and would have been guaranteed to get two costume/canvas relic cards instead of just one.
If it hasn't been made abundantly clear already, I DO NOT RECOMMEND the MJ Holding Company "Wrestling Mystery Box" to anyone. If you see it in your local Walmart, avoid at all costs. Spend your money on one of the recent Topps WWE blaster boxes that they'll likely have on the shelf, too.
[UPDATE - 11/29/2018]
I contacted MJ Holding through their website a few weeks ago, to see if they would be willing to do something to make me a satisfied customer. After all, I bought three of these boxes expecting at least one autograph card, as advertised, and received just one costume card. I exchanged e-mails with Guadalupe Luna, the Retail Operations Administrator, who sent me a sealed WWE Then Now Forever blaster box ($20 value) with 10 packs of 7 cards, one Daniel Bryan tribute card, and one guaranteed relic card. As expected, the blaster box contained a canvas mat relic card; Rich Swann from the Royal Rumble event on 1/29/2017 (serial numbered #5 of 299). I've lost track of how many canvas mat relic cards I have by now. At least this is a very low numbered card, so it's got that going for it. Honestly, if MJ would have sent me an autographed card, then I would feel satisfied since that's what I expected to receive with my purchase. That said, they didn't have to send me anything, so I can't really complain too much. I still wouldn't buy another one of their Wrestling Mystery Boxes, though.
