The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part is the successful follow-up to 2014's The Lego Movie. Is it as good as the original? Read on to find out...

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part takes place five years after the events of the first film. The citizens of Bricksburg now face a new threat: Lego Duplo invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than it can be rebuilt. The battle to defeat the invaders and restore harmony to the Lego universe will take Emmet (voice of Chris Pratt), Lucy/Wyldstyle (voice of Elizabeth Banks), Batman (voice of Will Arnett) and their friends Unikitty (voice of Alison Brie), MetalBeard (voice of Nick Offerman), and Benny (voice of Charlie Day) to faraway, unexplored worlds, including a galaxy filled with fantastic planets, strange characters and catchy new songs. It will test their courage, creativity and Master Building skills, and reveal just how special they really are.

I don't envy the filmmakers behind The Lego Movie 2. They had quite a tall task ahead of them. How do you follow The Lego Movie when audiences will already be aware of the huge twist ending. As a result, The Lego Movie 2 features far more live-action segments than its predecessor. I don't know if this was because they figured, "Well, the cat's out of the bag, so we might as well include more of them"; of if it was a matter of figuring that audiences wouldn't wholly "buy" it taking place almost entirely in the imagined animated landscape anymore. Whatever the case may be, expect for the human siblings Finn (Jadon Sand) and Bianca (Brooklynn Prince) to play a bigger role in the story here.

The story is good, but honestly, not as good as the first film. That's because adults watching, knowing the twist of the original, will have it all figured out through the use of puns like "Systar System" and "Ar-mom-eggedon" - the latter relating to Maya Rudolph's appearance as Finn and Bianca's mother. The new major Lego brick characters are Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi (voice of Tiffany Haddish) and General Mayhem (voice of Stephanie Beatriz). The Queen is a shape-shifter, and Mayhem is an ambiguous suit-wearing space-faring bounty hunter reminiscent of Samus from the classic video game Metroid. While the characters are great on their own, neither are as memorable as the characters from the first film. The same could be said of the new songs as well. In fact, that pretty much sums up the movie: It's good, but not as good as the original.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part is presented in its original 2.40:1 aspect ratio with a runtime of 1:47:09. On the audio side, there's Dolby Atmos and Dolby TrueHD 7.1 tracks for English, and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio tracks for English Descriptive, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. The film includes English SDH, French, Spanish, and Portuguese subtitles. (The Portuguese audio and subtitles are not mentioned on the case.) The first print run includes a beautiful slipsleeve.

All of the bonus features that can be found on the disc are in HD.
- Audio Commentary with director Mike Mitchell, writers/producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and animation director Tricia Gum
- Everything Is Awesome Sing-Along (1:52:26) – This isn't quite what its name implies. It's not simply the movie with lyrics at the bottom of the screen during the songs. The first 2:37 is an intro video which explains that watching this "version" of the movie, bits of dialog text will be animated on-screen, pop-up text trivia will be displayed, lyrics will be displayed during the songs, and more. Obviously, this is geared towards kids, but its a neat little feature that I'm sure adults will enjoy, too. Do note that English is the only audio track, though all subtitle languages are available. This "version" of the movie runs five minutes longer than the "Theatrical Version" due to the introduction and other things.
- They Come In Pieces: Assembling The Lego Movie 2 (8:49) – Featurette highlighting A-list voice talent including Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, and Tiffany Haddish.
- Emmet's Holiday Party: A Lego Movie Short (2:43) – Holiday themed animated short.
- Outtakes & Deleted Scenes (12:22) – Ten scenes shown back-to-back. Includes: "Crosswalk", "Welcome to the Systar System", "Rex Signs a Check, Autographs a Pic, & Plays Tic Tac Toe", "On the Rexcelsior", "Guards Animated", "Superman's Crystal", "Mayhem Saves Lucy", "Lucy Saves Mayhem", "The Video", and "Justice League".
- Super Cool Music Video (3:29) – The "Official Lyric Version" of the music video by Beck featuring Robyn and The Lonely Island.
- Promotion Spots – Fun custom spots featured during the theatrical campaign. Includes: "In 2019 Be Whatever You Want To Be" (0:43), "Me and My Minifig" (3:00), "Please Silence Your Cell Phones" (0:55), "Lego Sets In Action" (2:17), and "Lego Designers" (3:30).

A digital copy code voucher is also included in the standard two-disc Blu-ray case.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part is available on Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack, 4K/Blu-Ray Combo Pack, and individual DVD. The original Lego Movie is also available on Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack, 4K/Blu-Ray Combo Pack, and individual DVD.
