Trailer Trauma 3: '80s Horror-Thon Blu-Ray Review
By Paul Rudoff on Apr. 13, 2020 at 11:55 PM in Home Video, Horror

This is one of an ongoing series of reviews that looks at various Blu-ray compilations of movie trailers and TV spots, most notably Umbrella Entertainment's Drive-In Delirium series and Garagehouse Pictures' Trailer Trauma series. Today's review details Trailer Trauma 3: '80s Horror-Thon. Read on to find out more...
As the title implies, this release contains trailers for various horror movies from the entire duration of the 1980s - ALL 10 YEARS!!! There are a nice mix of mainstream Hollywood motion pictures, as well as obscure B-movies, thus giving a little something for everyone. Of course, if you like LOTS of nudity and mature content, then you will like it even more. This disc would be rated R, if it were rated in the U.S. Almost all of the 255 trailers have the blue/green/red "bands" included before them, which makes watching this a bit of a chore as you have to sit through them before (just about) each and every trailer. Sure, they may be on screen for only five seconds, but with this many trailers, that adds up to almost 20 MINUTES!!! On the positive side, by including the bands, and all of the company logos and end screens, these trailers are as complete as possible.
The trailers are shown chronologically, from 1980 to 1989, and alphabetically per each year. There is one trailer per chapter. All of the movie years listed below come from the IMDB and are assumed to be correct. While the trailer list included inside the case lists the years, I decided to look EVERYTHING up in the IMDB and use that, instead, for consistency.
I'd also like to point out something I just discovered: there are two versions of The Hidden (1987) trailer. As the car drives towards the tunnel in L.A.'s MacArthur Park, right as the cop says, "stole six cars", there are two different shots from the scene. The version on Drive-In Delirium #3 shows a shot of the tunnel exterior, while the version on Trailer Trauma #3 has a shot of the car driving away from people sitting on the park's overpass wall. It's at the 0:42 mark in this trailer, which is the same as the Trailer Trauma #3 version.
-- SPECIFICATIONS --
The total trailer runtime is 7:18:58, which is 2:07:24 for Disc 1 and 5:11:34 for Disc 2. For some reason, they chose not to split the content evenly between the two discs. Maybe it was so they could use a single-layer disc and a dual-layer disc, instead of two dual-layer discs. The full chapter/trailer list is below, following this review. The trailers on Disc 1 are presented in English uncompressed PCM 1.0 Mono, and the trailers on Disc 2 are presented in English uncompressed PCM 2.0 Stereo. There are no subtitles, but were you really expecting any?!? All trailers are shown in full 1920x1080 high definition, with various aspect ratios per each film. The disc is region-free and plays fine on U.S. Blu-ray players.
-- PICTURE & AUDIO QUALITY --
Unlike the previous two Trailer Trauma releases, the film reels these trailers were sourced from were not as dirty and damaged. Yes, there are a handful of trailers that look really bad, but for the most part, these trailers are only a few steps below the quality of the Drive-In Delirium releases. In the trailer list below, I noted the few trailers that have notable defects due to print damage (audio starts in-progress a second or two after the video starts, cut off at the end, and minor edits).
I'd be remiss if I didn't also mention that a huge chunk of trailers on Disc 2 - almost all from chapter 42 through 50 - have audio that is off sync from the video. I can't believe that no one noticed this in the Quality Assurance process.
-- SPECIAL FEATURES --
Disc 1 features an Audio Commentary with Exhumed Film's Dan Fraga, Harry Guerro, and Jesse Nelson on the 1980 trailers; and Chris Poggialion on the 1981 trailers. There are also the following Garagehouse Pictures Trailers (5:41): Ninja Busters (1984/2015), Trailer Trauma #1 Blu-ray, Trailer Trauma #2 Blu-ray, and The Satanist (1968). Disc 2 features an Audio Commentary with Ted Geoghegan (on 1982), Michael Gingold (on 1983), Tim Ferrante (on 1984), Grady Hendrix (on 1985), Stephen Romano (on 1986 & 1987), Dan Buskirk (on 1988), and James "Doc Terror" Harris (on 1989).

-- PACKAGING --
The single disc comes inside a standard 12mm clear Blu-ray case. The reverse/inside of the case artwork is a trailer/chapter list running across both sides. Do note that for Disc 2, the order for "Pranks" and "Poltergeist" is swapped. Poltergeist should come first.
-- CONCLUSION --
I like horror movies, and the 1980s is my favorite pop culture decade, so this was a MOST EXCELLENT collection for me. Just about every mainstream and obscure horror movie has a trailer here. The only ones missing, off the top of my head, are both Ghostbusters films, both Gremlins films, A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, and Killer Klowns from Outer Space (which is on Drive-In Delirium 5). The majority of these 255 trailers are also on the various Drive-In Delirium releases, and in better quality, too - although not in one single release.
However, I've come to realize that the one thing these Trailer Trauma releases have going for them that Drive-In Delirium releases don't, is that the trailers are presented as completely as possible. They not only include the blue/green/red "bands" (even though it's annoying to sit through them between each and every trailer), but there are some company logos (such as the TriStar Pictures logo at the start of Night of the Comet) and end screens (such as "Opens November 16th At Theatres Everywhere" at the end of Night of the Comet) that were not present on the Drive-In Delirium releases. If only the quality was as good as the Drive-In Delirium releases.
At this point, I hope that either Umbrella Entertainment or Garagehouse Pictures starts making trailer compilations that go for genres outside of horror and grindhouse, and a 1990s trailer compilation would be nice. Both companies have, in my opinion, exhausted the supply of horror and grindhouse films from the 1960s through the 1980s.
