Mill Creek Entertainment recently released the Hollow Man (2000) (Director's Cut) Steelbook Blu-ray. Let's take a look at it...
[ SYNOPSIS ]
When power-hungry scientist Dr. Sebastian Caine (Kevin Bacon) and his team develop a serum that induces complete invisibility, they can't wait to put it to the test. Having successfully performed the procedure on animals, Caine is determined to attempt the ultimate challenge... human experimentation. Using himself as the first subject, the invisible Caine finds himself free to do the unthinkable. But Caine's experiment takes an unexpected turn when his team fails to return him to normal. Growing more and more out of control, Caine is doomed to a future without flesh as the Hollow Man.
[ SPECIFICATIONS ]
The movie is presented in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with a runtime of 1:59:17 for the Director's Cut. (The Theatrical Cut is not included.) The movie has been rated R for strong violence, language and some sexuality/nudity. Audio languages include English. Subtitle languages include English SDH.
[ SPECIAL FEATURES ]
All of the content listed below can be found on the Blu-ray disc.
- Full Transparency: Scoring Hollow Man (18:29) - A 2023 interview with composer Jerry Goldsmith's biographer Jeff Bond.
No digital copy code voucher is included inside the beautiful Steelbook case, which features a shadowy Sebastian Caine on the front, and a hooded Sebastian Caine with glowing eyes on the back. The inside features a photo of the holographic Hollow Man spread across both sides.
[ NOTES ]
The Hollow Man (2000) Steelbook Blu-ray is currently a Walmart-exclusive. I do not know if it will be available at other retailers at a later date. While Mill Creek's disc has a new interview with Jeff Bond, it is missing all of the extras from Sony's 2007 Blu-ray, which includes the HBO making of special "Anatomy of a Thriller", "Fleshing Out the Hollow Man" (a 15-part documentary), and three VFX Picture in Picture Comparisons ("Cramer's Death", "Sprinkler Attack", and "Sebastian's Demise"). So, if you want all of the extras, you have to buy both releases.
If you want the sequel, Hollow Man 2 (2006), you have a few options, depending on if you want extras, and if you have a region-free Blu-ray player. With a regular U.S. Region 1/A-locked player, your options are the Sony DVD for the extras and the Mill Creek Double Feature Blu-ray for the movie in HD, even though you will then have an extra copy of the first film. If you want all of the DVD extras (except for the Storyboard Gallery with 49 stills), and the movie in HD, you will need a region-free player as the only release I could find is 88 Films' Region-B-locked Hollow Man 1&2 Collector's Edition Blu-ray set from the United Kingdom. It also includes both Theatrical and Director's Cuts of the first film, and all of the Sony extras for that film, plus some new extras. So, if you buy it, you really won't need this new Mill Creek Steelbook (unless you really want the Steelbook and Jeff Bond interview), and you won't need the Sony Blu-ray of the first film, either.
