May (2002) Blu-Ray Review (Vestron Video Collector's Series #32)
By Paul Rudoff on May. 20, 2025 at 6:00 PM in Home Video, Horror

May (2002) arrives on Blu-ray as the 32nd entry in Lionsgate's Vestron Video Collector's Series, "a line of classic and unique genre films, remastered and numbered, and packed with special features." I have reviewed several other titles in the series.
[ SYNOPSIS ]
In this horror cult classic from writer-director Lucky McKee, May (Angela Bettis) is a socially awkward veterinary assistant with a lazy eye and an obsession with perfection. Never really fitting in, she grew up wearing a pirate's patch, and her sole companion continues to be a perfectly kept doll - until she meets handsome Adam (Jeremy Sisto) and his beautiful hands. As May's relationships with Adam and an alluring colleague (Anna Faris) descend into depravity, she soon finds out that people are not 100% perfect - only certain parts of them are.
[ SPECIFICATIONS ]
The movie is presented in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio with a runtime of 1:33:32. The movie has been rated R for strong violence/gore, some sexuality and language. Audio languages include English. Subtitle languages include English and Spanish.
[ SPECIAL FEATURES ]
Here is a list of the special features that are included on the disc. All of the interviews were originally done in 2023 by Second Sight Films for their UK Blu-ray release. There is nothing new here, and nothing on that UK disc that is missing here; thus making this the Region A "version" of that disc.
- Audio Commentary - with Alexandra Heller-Nicholas.
- Audio Commentary - with director Lucky McKee, cinematographer Steve Yedlin, editor Chris Sivertson, and actors Angela Bettis, Nichole Hiltz and Bret Roberts.
- Audio Commentary - with director Lucky McKee, editor Rian Johnson, composer Jammes Luckett, production designer Leslie Keel and craft services guy Benji.
- The Toymaker (24:49) - An interview with Lucky McKee.
- Perfect Hands (11:23) - An interview with Jeremy Sisto.
- Blankety Blank (16:59) - An interview with James Duval.
- How to Execute a Murder (13:12) - An interview with cinematographer Steve Yedlin.
- Peeling Back the Layers (19:24) - An interview with editor Rian Johnson.
- Jack and Jill (20:54) - An interview with editor Chris Sivertson.
- In the Cut (17:34) - An interview with editor Kevin Ford.
- Blood, Gore and Rock 'n' Roll (24:08) - An interview with composer Jammes Luckett.
- Bits and Pieces: On the Set of May (14:43)
- From Frankenstein to May (21:08) - A visual essay by Dr. Miranda Corcoran.
A Digital Copy code voucher is also included in the standard one-disc blue Blu-ray case. The first print run includes a slipcover. The cover art was done by Matt Ryan Tobin.
[ NOTES ]
May is the first film in Lionsgate's Vestron Video Collector's Series to be released exclusively by Lionsgate Limited, where it is being sold for $24.99. I certainly hope that it is a timed exclusive, and that a wider release will happen by the end of the year. All of the other titles in the series (see list below) are available from Amazon and other retailers.
