With Christmas (and soon Hanukkah) now in the rear-view mirror, I'll be taking a look at several new releases that would be great to buy with all of those gift cards you just received. If you love horror movies, Warner Brothers recently released IT: Chapter Two on 4K/Blu-ray Combo Pack. Read on to find out more...
IT: Chapter Two takes places twenty-seven years after the Losers Club defeated Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard). He has returned to terrorize the town of Derry once more. Now adults, the Losers have long since gone their separate ways. However, people are disappearing again, so Mike (Isaiah Mustafa), the only one of the group to remain in their hometown, calls the others home. Damaged by the experiences of their past, they must each conquer their deepest fears to destroy Pennywise once and for all...putting themselves directly in the path of the shape-shifting clown that has become deadlier than ever.
At almost three hours long, IT: Chapter Two is the conclusion to IT (2017), which was an excellent adaptation of the Stephen King novel. I thoroughly enjoyed "Chapter One", so I went into Chapter Two with high expectations. Honestly, I can't say that those expectations were 100% met. I found Chapter Two to be more creepy than scary, and some of the grotesque creatures to be a bit cartoonish. I think the filmmakers intended for this to be a dark comedy, as I can't otherwise explain the use of Juice Newton's "Angel of the Morning" during one of the "gross out" scenes. All that said, I still enjoyed Chapter Two; just not as much as I thought I would.
While chapter one featured a bunch of young up and comers, Chapter Two features some notable adult actors, such as James McAvoy as Bill, Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain as Beverly, Bill Hader as Richie, Isaiah Mustafa as Mike, Jay Ryan as Ben, James Ransone as Eddie, and Andy Bean as Stanley. Reprising their roles as the original members of the Losers Club are Jaeden Martell as Bill, Wyatt Oleff as Stanley, Jack Dylan Grazeras Eddie, Finn Wolfhard (soon to be in Ghostbusters: Afterlife) as Richie, Sophia Lillis as Beverly, Chosen Jacobs as Mike, and Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben. Of course Bill Skarsgard returns in the seminal role of Pennywise, and even author Stephen King makes a cameo appearance, keeping up the old tradition of appearing in film and TV adaptations of his work.
IT: Chapter Two is presented in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio with a runtime of 2:49:25. Audio languages include English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Hindi, and Thai. The film includes English SDH, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Cantonese, Korean, and Mandarin subtitles. The first print run includes a beautiful slipsleeve.
There are three discs in the case. The first two (4K UHD and Blu-ray) contain the movie and this bonus feature:
- Commentary with director Andy Muschietti
- The Summers of IT - Chapter One: You'll Float, Too (35:38) - Contains a lot of interviews and behind the scenes footage, including auditions, from the first part.
- The Summers of IT - Chapter Two: IT Ends (39:30) - The kids are interviewed a couple of years later while making the second part, and we meet the adults playing the grown up versions.
- Pennywise Lives Again (9:55) - A look at Bill Skarsgard and his transformation into the psycho clown.
- This Meeting of The Losers' Club Has Officially Begun (8:12) - Focuses on the young and older versions of the characters.
- Finding the Deadlights (6:18) - Interviews and on-set footage with author Stephen King.
IT: Chapter Two is available on 4K UHD/Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack, and Individual DVD. If you missed Chapter One, that is also available on 4K UHD/Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray, and DVD. Finally, the edited home video release of the 1990 Tim Curry TV movie is available on Blu-ray, and DVD. Unfortunately, the original unedited two-part version of the 1990 TV movie has not been released onto a digital disc format. You'll need to go back to VHS (also here) and Laserdisc (also here) to see it.
