The Goonies 4K UHD + Blu-ray Combo Pack Review

Warner Brothers just released a quartet of classic films onto 4K UHD disc. Today, I'll take a look at the The Goonies 4K/Blu-ray Combo Pack, which was one of those released. Read on to find out more about it...
The Goonies (1985) follows a tight-knit group of young friends desperate to save their homes from a greedy real-estate developer. After discovering a mysterious treasure map, they find themselves being chased by a family of fugitives through an underground realm full of twisting passages and booby traps. Their quest is to find the hidden gold of legendary pirate One-Eyed Willy.
If you grew up in the 1980s, as I did, you probably have already seen The Goonies a countless number of times on VHS and on TV. It is the ultimate kids adventure movie, featuring thrills for the younger kids, and a little romance for the older ones. I suspect that next year's Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be the modern-day equivalent of a film like The Goonies. It's always been a childhood favorite of mine, and I've owned it on DVD and Blu-ray, previously. I'm happy to see that it has gotten the 4K treatment, even though I don't think the transfer is as good as the one used for Beetlejuice. While the picture is sharper than the Blu-ray, it's still really soft, though that may be a fault of the source material. Skin tones seem a bit on the red side, though other colors are represented quite well.
The Goonies is presented in a 2.40:1 aspect ratio with a runtime of 1:53:58. Audio languages include English, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, and Czech. The film includes English SDH, French, Italian, Spanish, Czech, Dutch, Korean, Mandarin, Romanian, and Thai subtitles. The first print run includes a beautiful embossed slipsleeve.
Here's a list of all of the bonus features that can be found on the included Blu-ray disc. The UHD disc only contains the movie. Warner Bros. didn't port over the audio commentary to go along with the movie, much less add any new bonus features.
- Audio Commentary - with director Richard Donner and actors Jonathan Ke Quan (Data), Corey Feldman (Mouth), Sean Astin (Mikey), Kerri Green (Andy), Martha Plimpton (Stef), Jeff Cohen (Chunk), and Josh Brolin (Brand).
- Hidden Treasures - A video version of the audio commentary in which the director and cast occasionally show up on screen as they record the commentary.
- The Making of The Goonies (6:49) - Vintage featurette produced in 1985.
- Deleted Scenes (6:53) - A collection of three scenes: the kids at a store being accosted by Troy, the kids scouting the Fratelli's shack when Data's gadgets malfunction, and the infamous octopus scene.
- Music Video (12:04) - Cyndi Lauper's classic "The Goonies R Good Enough" music video featuring the movie cast, WWF wrestlers, and The Bangles.
- Trailer (2:41)
A digital copy code voucher is also included in the standard two-disc black UHD Blu-ray case.
The Goonies is available on 4K UHD/Blu-ray Combo Pack and in a 4K UHD/Blu-ray Gift Set with a lot of pack-in bonus items. Back in 2010, for the film's 25th anniversary, Warner Bros. released a 25th Anniversary Collector's Edition Blu-ray Gift Set, which contained a board game, magazine reproductions, and storyboard cards. None of those pack-in items are included in the new 4K/Blu gift set, so even though that same Blu-ray disc is included in the 4K/Blu set, you might want to pick up a copy of that set for those extra items. I used to own it (before Hurricane Sandy destroyed it), and although I could do without the space-hogging board game, I really liked the magazine reproductions and storyboard cards.
All images were taken from the IMDB gallery of the film. The item was provided by Warner Brothers for review on this site.
