Lionsgate recently released the The Cabin in the Woods (2011) 4k/Blu-ray Steelbook (Best Buy exclusive). Read on to find out more about it...
[ SYNOPSIS ]
A rambunctious group of five college friends steals away for a weekend of debauchery in an isolated country cabin, only to be attacked by horrific supernatural creatures in a night of endless terror and bloodshed. Sound familiar? Just wait. As the teens begin to exhibit standard horror-movie behavior, a group of technicians in a control room are scrutinizing, and sometimes even controlling, every move the terrified kids make! With their efforts continually thwarted by an all-powerful "eye in the sky", do they have any chance of escape?
[ SPECIFICATIONS ]
The movie is presented in a 2.40:1 aspect ratio with a runtime of 1:35:02. Audio languages include English, Spanish, and French on the 4K disc; and English only on the Blu-ray disc. Subtitle languages include English SDH on both discs.
[ SPECIAL FEATURES ]
All of the content listed below can be found on both discs, except for the picture-in-picture track, which is on the Blu-ray only.
- Audio Commentary - with writer/director Drew Goddard and writer/producer Joss Whedon.
- It's Not What You Think: The Cabin in the Woods Bonus View Mode (BLU-RAY ONLY) - This picture-in-picture mode features the cast and crew talking about the film. It plays in a window so tiny that it's a little hard to read some of the titles identifying the speakers.
- We Are Not Who We Are: Making The Cabin in the Woods (28:33) - Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard talk about their writing process, and there's quite a bit of behind the scenes footage, too.
- The Secret Secret Stash (13:07) - Contains two brief featurettes: "Marty's Stash" and "My Name is Joss and I'll Be Your Guide".
- An Army of Nightmares: Makeup and Animatronic Effects (12:10) - A good look at the movie's special effects.
- Primal Terror: Visual Effects (12:07) - Concentrates on elements like pre-viz, greenscreen and CGI as well as some of the practical effects.
- Wonder-Con Q&aA (27:30) - A fun session with Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard.
- Theatrical Trailer (2:27)
Although Lionsgate had previously released this 4K/Blu set, the Steelbook case is new. This is one of the better Steelbook cases I have seen. There is a plastic sleeve over it featuring the title in the middle and some leaves on the bottom. Pulling this off, you'll see that the leaves were covering the two guys sitting in the control room looking at the action going out outside the titular cabin. While on the back cover, a hand coming out from a doorway on the sleeve is revealed to be one of many creatures breaking through the door.
The interior of the case features a drawing of a ritualistic sacrifice. The two discs sit on opposite sides. I usually hate Steelbook cases because the disc holders are horrible and make getting the discs out such a pain in the butt. I must not have been the only one to complain because the disc locking mechanisms have been changed! It is now SOOOOO much easier to get the discs in and out, and I no longer fear that the discs are going to break in the process. Of course, my pet peeve about Steelbook cases being impossible to replace should they get broken still holds true.
A digital copy code voucher is included inside the case.
[ NOTES ]
The Cabin in the Woods is available on 4K/Blu-ray Steelbook exclusively from Best Buy. If you don't care much for Steelbook packaging, you can also buy it from Amazon on 4K/Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD.
