Warner Brothers recently released the Young Sheldon: The Complete Series Blu-ray. Read on to find out more about it...
[ SYNOPSIS ]
The captivating journey of child prodigy Sheldon Cooper (Iain Armitage) as he navigates life in East Texas and struggles to find his place in a world that doesn't quite understand his brilliance. Set in the late 1980s and early 1990s, this series follows the Coopers as they juggle the big Texas three - football, faith and family - all complicated by a son whose only interest is the relentless pursuit of science and knowledge.
[ EPISODES ]
The 14-disc set (two discs per season) includes all 141 episodes of the 2017-2024 seven-season CBS series. Each episode runs about 22 minutes. Unlike the DVD version, the case interior does NOT list the entire disc breakdown. From what I can see, the breakdown is exactly the same on Blu-ray as it is on DVD, so see the image in my review of the DVD release if you want to see how it all breaks down.
[ SPECIFICATIONS ]
The show is presented in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The show is Not Rated. Audio languages include English. Subtitle languages include English SDH.
[ SPECIAL FEATURES ]
All of the special features below can be found on the respective Blu-ray discs.
- DISC 02 (S1,D2): Young Sheldon: An Origin Story (9:45) - The cast and creators talk about giving Sheldon a superhero-like origin story, casting the series, the characters, making it a single camera show, the narration, and more.
- DISC 02 (S1,D2): Sibling Revelry (4:07) - Stars Montana Jordan, Iain Armitage, and Raegan Revord sit down together to discuss how they are similar to their characters, what it's like working with one another, and more.
- DISC 06 (S3,D2): The Coopers, East Texas, and the '80s (5:28) - The cast and crew talk about recreating the look of the 1980s, how the younger cast members struggled with the older phone technology, and more.
- DISC 08 (S4,D2): Cooped Up with the Coopers (8:24) - The cast reunite in late 2020 for a video-conference discussion about what they've been doing during the COVID-19 quarantine. (This feature has been officially uploaded to YouTube.)
- DISC 09 (S5,D1): Time Flies When You're Having Fun: Young Sheldon at 100 (8:16) - The cast and crew look back at how the children have changed over the past five years while working in the series. They also talk about Sheldon's iconic knock, their characters' signature moves, their favorite episodes and scenes, incorporating the actors' interests into their characters, filming the dinner table scenes, and more.
- DISC 14 (S7,D2): Sheldon's Secret Origins and Easter Eggs (11:25) - The cast and producers look back on the series' journey. They share some of their favorite Easter eggs and Cooper family origins that have been hidden along the way.
No digital copy code voucher is included. However, the thick, clear multi-disc DVD-size case fits inside a slipcover. There are two types of these cases. One case has pages that are not attached to the case exterior with disc holders that have no give to them, making disc removal a risky chore. That case is used for the Powerpuff Girls and Succession sets. Sadly, this is the case used for the Young Sheldon Blu-ray release. There is no need for me to include a photo, as it looks exactly the same as the photos in the previously-linked reviews of Powerpuff Girls and Succession, only it's plain white inside.
The other thick, clear multi-disc DVD-size case has all of the disc pages attached to the left and right sides of the case, with each disc holder capable of holding multiple stacked discs. The discs are a little easier to get out in this case than in the other case. Interestingly, this very-slightly-better (but still poor) case is used for the Young Sheldon DVD release. Check out that previously-linked review to see a photo of it. It's still a horrible case, it's just the lesser of two evils.
It would be much more preferable if the studio put each season (or a pair of seasons) in a standard-size multi-disc case, and then put several of those cases inside a side-loading slipbox. That's the way Warner Brothers packaged the recent Friends 4K set. Heck, it would have been nice if Warner Brothers were consistent with the packaging for the Young Sheldon Blu-ray and DVD sets. They each come in a different type of case (neither perfect) and the DVD includes a disc breakdown printed on the case liner interior, which the Blu-ray doesn't (it's plain white inside). The Blu-ray case is about half an inch thinner, which is the only advantage it has over the DVD case.
[ NOTES ]
Young Sheldon: The Complete Series is available on Blu-ray and DVD. A fun little show with many early 1990s references (especially in the early seasons) that became less about the Sheldon Cooper character and more about his much more likable family, especially his grandmother, Connie "Meemaw" Tucker (played by Ghostbusters star Annie Potts). The show is RECOMMENDED; I just wish that the packaging was better.
Young Sheldon is spin-off from The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Series, which is available on Blu-ray and DVD. Another spin-off, Georgie & Mandy's First Marrage, premiered on CBS on October 17th.
