Ghoulies Go to College (1991) Blu-ray Review (Vestron Video Collector's Series #34)

Ghoulies Go to College (1991) arrives on Blu-ray as the 34th entry in Lionsgate's Vestron Video Collector's Series, "a line of classic and unique genre films, remastered and numbered, and packed with special features." I have reviewed several other titles in the series.
[ SYNOPSIS ]
When it comes to higher education, the Ghoulies aren't just interested - they'll crawl out of the toilet for it! In this third installment of the campy horror franchise, Professor Ragnar (Kevin McCarthy), who dabbles in the occult, decides to sabotage Prank Week by summoning three Ghoulies trapped in the pages of a demonic comic book. Once freed, the raunchy creatures party like there's no tomorrow, trashing the campus and pulling their own elaborate - and deadly - pranks. But one couple decides to take on the monstrous menace, leading to an unhinged, Ghoulie-tastic climax.
[ SPECIFICATIONS ]
The movie is presented in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with a runtime of 1:34:33. The movie has been rated R. Audio languages include English. Subtitle languages include English.
[ SPECIAL FEATURES ]
Here is a list of the special features that are included on the disc.
- Audio Commentary - with film historians T.J. Bowser and Paul Ashford of Project Louder.
- Mr. Carter Goes to College (18:33) - A 2025 interview with Evan MacKenzie, who plays Skip Carter in the film.
- Ghoulies 'n' Gags: Behind the Screenplay of Ghoulies Go to College (17:28) - A 2025 interview with screenwriter Jim Herzfeld.
- Out of the Bowl: Making the Monsters of Ghoulies Go to College (14:53) - A 2025 interview with "location Ghoulie operator" Michael Deak.
- English, French, German, and Spanish Trailers (6:20) - One trailer in each language; four total. They have been poorly deinterlaced with "blend fields", then upscaled to 1080. These were all originally found on the German Blu-ray from NSM Records.
- Still Gallery (7:31)
A Digital Copy code voucher is also included in the standard one-disc blue Blu-ray case. The first print run includes a slipcover. For the first time in the Vestron line, there is reversible case artwork. The default side matches the slipcover with a new drawing, and the reverse features (what I assume is) the original theatrical poster art with the trio of Ghoulies coming out of a toilet. Interesting, there are different movie photos on the back covers on each side. Usually reversible artwork is limited to just the front cover.
[ NOTES ]
Ghoulies Go to College (1991) is available to buy on Blu-ray through the link in the list below. This is a goofy fun installment in the series that leans more towards cartoonish humor than anything that is truly horror. That's fine with me. Great supporting cast, featuring Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, UHF), Marcia Wallace (The Bob Newhart Show - referenced in the movie!), and an early role for Eva LaRue (who previously appeared in Crash and Burn, recently released on Blu-ray).
The four-film Ghoulies series is owned by different studios, so it is unlikely there will ever be a "complete franchise" box set. You'll have to buy the other three movies individually: Ghoulies 4K UHD + Blu-ray (from MVD), Ghoulies II 4K UHD + Blu-ray (from MVD), and Ghoulies IV Blu-ray (region-free [back cover incorrectly states "B"] German import from WMM). The Ghoulies IV Blu-ray has English audio for the movie (both widescreen and fullscreen), as well as English and German trailers. The menus are in German, but are easy to decipher. It also comes in a Mediabook (aka Digibook) packaging - with four different covers - which is a 16-page book of photos and an essay in German, with the Blu-ray disc stored inside the front cover, and a region-free PAL-format DVD disc stored inside the back cover. The Mediabook is the one I have because the standard packaging release didn't exist at the time I bought it.
