[ NOTES ]
The Toxic Avenger (2025) is available on 4K UHD, 4K UHD Steelbook, 4K UHD + 1984 Film, Blu-ray, and DVD.
I watched the original four films in July 2024 right before writing the review of the Musical DVD. Those original films are available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD. The Musical is only available on MOD DVD-R. Finally, there was an animated series in the late 1980s/early 1990s that is available on Blu-ray.
When I watched the original films and the musical in July 2024, my preference was 100% for the musical. I really did not like the original films at all. They were stupid, unnecessarily offensive, and filled with unfunny gross-out "jokes" that went on for way too long. The series got worse and worse and it progressed. This new 2025 film - it was actually completed in 2023, but didn't find a distributor until 2025 - is an improvement over the 1984 film. It, at least, has actors you've heard of, such as Peter Dinklage, Kevin Bacon, and Elijah Wood. The story adds family drama to the mix, with Winston/Toxie being a widowed father of a teenage son. That aspect doesn't really add much to the film, but doesn't take much away from it, either. Dinklage does a great job as Winston, earning sympathy from the audience because he can't pay for life-saving medical treatment. However, things take a huge downturn once Windows becomes The Toxic Avenger. For starters, it's not Peter Dinklage under the make-up. The role is played by a very short woman named Luisa Guerreiro. I guess Dinklage is too good to be covered in practical special effects makeup. He does continue to provide the voice of the character. The big problem isn't who's under the costume, but the fact that it's a very short person. The Toxic Avenger isn't very threatening when he has a very short stature. He can't be seen as a serious threat, which would help as a counterpoint to all of the bizarre excessive violence and humor. So, I'd save give it a rental/stream first before committing to a purchase.
