Lionsgate has released, or will soon release, the Greenland (2020) 4K UHD + Blu-ray. Read on to find out more about it...
[ SYNOPSIS ]
A family fights for survival as a planet-killing comet races to Earth. John Garrity (Gerard Butler), his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin), and young son Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd) make a perilous journey to their only hope for sanctuary. Amid terrifying news accounts of cities around the world being leveled by the comet's fragments, the Garritys experience the best and worst in humanity while they battle the increasing panic and lawlessness surrounding them. As the countdown to global apocalypse approaches zero, their incredible trek culminates in a desperate and last-minute flight to a possible safe haven.
[ SPECIFICATIONS ]
The movie is presented in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio with a runtime of 1:59:33 (1:59:54 on Blu-ray due to the addition of the Universal Studios logo at the start). The movie has been rated PG-13 for intense sequences of disaster action, some violence, bloody images and brief strong language. Audio languages include English. Subtitle languages include English SDH, Spanish.
[ SPECIAL FEATURES ]
All of the content listed below can be found on both the 4K UHD and Blu-ray discs.
- Audio Commentary - with director Ric Roman Waugh and producer Basil Iwanyk.
- Humanity (1:20) - A glorified trailer posing as a brief featurette.
- Deleted Scenes (4:55 on 4k / 5:07 on blu) - The three scenes include "Colin", "Poker", and "Original Ending". The reason the Blu-ray runs longer is due to the addition of title cards before the three scenes.
- Deleted Scenes with Intros (6:30 on 4k / 7:56 on blu) - The same three scenes with optional introductions by Ric Roman Waugh. The reason the Blu-ray runs longer is because it includes an EXTRA introduction to ALL of the deleted scenes, as well as the three scene-specific intros.
A digital copy code voucher is included inside the standard two-disc black 4K UHD case. A slipcover is included.
[ NOTES ]
Greenland (2021) is available on 4K UHD + Blu-ray, Blu-ray only, and DVD. I was genuinely surprised when I opened up the 4K UHD + Blu-ray combo pack I just received from Lionsgate to find a Universal Blu-ray disc (from 2021) inside sitting across the new Lionsgate 4K disc. I really can't think of another combo pack release where one disc is courtesy of one studio and the other disc is courtesy of another. Yeah, a few multi-movie "franchise" sets - such as Terminator and Child's Play/Chucky - have discs from different studios, but those are collections of different films owned by different studios, even though they're from the same IP. This new Greenland 4K UHD + Blu-ray is a single film, which makes it a different situation.
Anyway, Greenland is a unique film in the "disaster" genre as it's really not about the disaster itself. It's all about the human drama leading up to an impending Extinction Level Event; that being a comet that is set to hit the Earth, wiping out all life on the planet as a result. While that countdown looms, the humans still have to deal with the devastation as pieces of the comet crash land across the globe. What really helps the film are the excellent performances by Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin as a married couple on the verge of divorce, with a seven-year-old son in tow. A gripping tale of humanity that is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
The sequel, Greenland 2: Migration (2026), is available on 4K UHD + Blu-ray, Blu-ray only, and DVD. I have not seen it, so I can't comment on whether it is better or worst than the first film.
