The Substitute (1996) 4K UHD + Blu-ray Review (Vestron Video Collector's Series #37)
By Paul Rudoff on Apr. 12, 2026 at 8:00 PM in Home Video

The Substitute (1996) arrives on 4K UHD (first in the line) & Blu-ray as the 37th entry in Lionsgate's Vestron Video Collector's Series, "a line of classic and unique genre films, remastered and numbered, and packed with special features." I have reviewed several other titles in the series.
[ SYNOPSIS ]
A mercenary faces off against one of his most formidable enemies: a high school gang. Shale (Tom Berenger) is an ex-Vietnam vet reeling from a botched covert operation. Returning home, he reunites with his girlfriend, Jane (Diane Venora), a high school teacher who's hospitalized after a beating by the Kings of Destruction gang. Hunting Jane's attackers, Shale goes undercover as a substitute teacher, and uncovers a cocaine highway running through the school involving gang leader Lacas (Marc Anthony) and the school's shady principal, Rolle (Ernie Hudson). Summoning his mercenaries, Shale goes to war with the Kings of Destruction - and rival guns for hire - on the unusual battleground of a high school, but for the usual stakes: life... and death.

[ NOTES ]
The Substitute (1996) is available to buy on Blu-ray through the link in the list below. This film has always been a favorite of mine for the past 30 years. I'm pretty sure I first caught it on Showtime around 1997 or 1998. For sure, I know that I taped it off one of the premium cable channels at the time. The big draw for me, originally, was Ernie Hudson; best known as Winston Zeddemore in the Ghostbusters films. He definitely gives a memorable performance that is the polar opposite of Winston, which came as a shock to me at the time. Re-watching the film now, I found the film to be just as enjoyable as I remember, even if it seems a bit reminiscent of other "teacher vs. gang members" films of the 1990s, such as Class of 1999 (1990) (a sci-fi film already in the Vestron line), Rage and Honor (1992), and of course, Dangerous Minds (1995) starring Michelle Pfeiffer. What I didn't remember about The Substitute (1996) was that it has a rather notable cast of character actors. In addition to stars Tom Berenger and Ernie Hudson, you'll also find Raymond Cruz, William Forsythe, Luis Guzman, Diane Venora, Glenn Plummer (the Jaguar owner from Speed), and Marc Anthony (yes, the singer!). This movie has an absolutely STACKED cast! Seriously, I can't recommend The Substitute highly enough.
What many may not know is that this film is actually the first in a series of FOUR films! Tom Berenger didn't come back for any of the sequels, as they all center around a new character, Karl Thomasson, portrayed by Treat Williams. The three sequels - subtitled School's Out (1998), Winner Takes All (1999), and Failure Is Not an Option (2001) - are not currently available on Blu-ray. I was hoping that the next release in the Vestron series would be a Triple Feature Blu-ray of these films, but as you can see from the list below, the stoner comedy The Stoned Age is set to be released on April 20th. (Get it? 4/20. lol) Maybe we'll get a "The Substitute 2-4 Triple Feature" Blu-ray in May or later this year, but nothing has been announced as of now. So, if you absolutely must own the other Substitute films on physical media right now, you'll have to buy them on DVD. They are all available separately - School's Out, Winner Takes All, and Failure Is Not an Option - though the most convenient option is the The Substitute 4-Film Pack DVD, Do note that the first and second films are 4:3 letterbox on DVD, but you can just ignore the first film's DVD since the 4K and Blu-ray renders it obsolete.
