Hello Boils and Ghouls. The Halloween season is upon us, which means lots of treats to enjoy on October 31st. Join me as I take a look at Warner Brothers' recently released The Lost Boys (1987) 4K UHD/Blu-ray combo pack. Read on to find out more...
[ SYNOPSIS ]
When their parents' divorce, Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam Emerson (Corey Haim) move with their mother to their grandfather's house in a California town nicknamed, "The Murder Capital of the World". Soon after arriving, Michael gets involved with a hell-raising motorcycle gang of vampires with a charismatic leader (Kiefer Sutherland). When Sam becomes involved with the Frog Brothers (Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander), who confess to being undercover Vampire hunters, he realizes it's up to them to save Michael and the rest of the town from the vampire gang.
[ SPECIFICATIONS ]
The movie is presented in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio with a runtime of 1:37:26. The movie has been rated R. Audio languages include English, Spanish, French, German, and Italian. Subtitle languages include English SDH, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Dutch.
[ SPECIAL FEATURES ]
All of the content listed below can be found on the Blu-ray disc, which is a NEW disc (currently not available separately). It loses out on the photo gallery (nearly 80 still photographs), and removes the map menu from the "World of Vampires" feature, that can be found on the old Blu-ray. Only the commentary is available on the 4K UHD disc.
- Audio Commentary - by director Joel Schumacher
- The Lost Boys: A Retrospective (24:00) - Features interviews with Joel Schumacher, producer Richard Donner, cinematographer Michael Chapman, and various members of the cast including Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Haim, and Corey Feldman.
- Inside the Vampires' Cave (18:49) - This four-part feature includes "A Director's Vision" (more interview clips with Joel Schumacher), "Comedy vs. Horror" (examines the melding of horror, suspense, and comedy in the film), "Fresh Blood: A New Look At Vampires" (delves deeper into the mythos of the Vampire), and "The Lost Boys Sequel?" (cast and crew discussing ideas for possible sequels - excluding the two that were made after this feature was originally produced)
- Vamping Out: The Undead Creations of Greg Cannom (14:02) - An in-depth look at the make-up used in the film.
- Haimster and Feldog: The Story of the 2 Coreys (4:41) - A look at this legendary pairing, going back to their auditioning for the same role in The Goonies and their off-screen friendship.
- Multi-Angle Video Commentary (56:43) - Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, and Jamison Newlander individually provide commentary over select scenes from the film running 18:23. When this feature was presented on DVD and the old Blu-ray, you would use your player's angle feature to switch between each pair of video and audio tracks. For this new Blu-ray, Warner Brothers removed that annoyance and is presenting this feature as three separate videos (no angles), which can be watched together using "Play All".
- World of Vampires (14:02) - A collection of 7 videos telling you about vampire lore around the world. When this feature was presented on DVD and the old Blu-ray, all of the videos were linked together via a world map. For this new Blu-ray, Warner Brothers removed that map and is presenting all videos on the same menu with everything else, though there is now a "Play All" option.
- The Lost Scenes (15:16) - A collection of deleted scenes. There is a painting blurred out in the last scene.
- Lou Gramm "Lost in the Shadows" Music Video (4:34)
- Trailer (1:24)
A digital copy code voucher is included inside the standard two-disc black UHD case. The first print run includes a shiny slipcover.
[ NOTES ]
The Lost Boys (1987) is available on 4K UHD/Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray and Individual DVD. There were two sequels made 20 years later, Lost Boys: The Tribe (2008) and Lost Boys: The Thirst (2010). Rather than link to the individual Blu-rays of each, I'll just point you to the three-disc Triple Feature Blu-ray set, which will also give you the original Blu-ray disc of the first film that contains the photo gallery missing from the Blu-ray included with the 4K.
