[ NOTES ]
Jurassic World: Rebirth (2025) is available on 4K UHD, 4K UHD Steelbook, Blu-ray, and DVD. If you wish to "preview" it, I'm sure it will be available on Peacock really soon.
The film serves as a reboot of a reboot of sorts. Although set many years after the last film, Dominion, none of the previous characters and actors appear. We have a whole new motley crew headed by Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson), who along with Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) and Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali), have been hired by Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend) to obtain genetic material from dinosaurs in order to create some live-saving medicine. Yes, dinosaurs are the main antagonists in the film, which already makes it better then Dominion, which focused more on a plague of locusts than on the prehistoric wildlife.
That's not to say that Rebirth is much better than Dominion. While the crew does go to an island filled with dinosaurs, and there is a lot of exciting dinosaur action, much of it is the same old shit we've seen re-treaded over and over again in the previous six films. Hell, the basic concept (mercenaries visit an abandoned island filled with dinosaurs) is lifted from the second film, The Lost World. Bits here and there are, more or less, copied from the first and third films, too.
Just as in Jurassic Park III, a family of "Unkillable Idiots" finds their way to the dinosaur-filled island after being rescued by the mercenaries. The Delgado family was attacked after they ventured out into the area of the sea where THE WHOLE WORLD knows not to travel to! The Delgados make the Nublar Six (on the Netflix animated series Camp Cretaceous and Chaos Theory) look like geniuses by comparison. After arriving on the island separated from the mercenaries, they are left to their own devices to survive against dinosaur threats for much of the film. How the foursome survives - despite making poor choices, having no supplies, skills, or training, and limited knowledge of dinosaurs - is the most unbelievable part of the film. Worse, their survival rate greatly surpasses that of the well-trained and well-armed mercenaries who are used to dealing with all manner of threats.
While there are some great action scenes, much of the proceedings are hampered by the artificiality of it all. Most of the time, it is clearly obvious that the scene was shot in front of a green-screen. I'm sure that the beautiful ultra high-resolution image helps to make everything look more fake. The previous six films looked more "real" than Rebirth. Yes, this is now the SEVENTH film in this series, and it needs to be the last. This is a franchise that never should have gone beyond four films, and some would say that was too many. The two in-canon Netflix animated series - Camp Cretaceous and Chaos Theory - are better, but not by much.
If you want all of the theatrical films on disc, a 7-Movie Collection is available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Only the first three seasons of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous are available on DVD. The last two seasons, and all (soon to be) four seasons of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, are only available streaming on Netflix. Perhaps after the second series concludes, both entire series will be released on Blu-ray. Finally, the LEGO Jurassic World Collection DVD collects all of the individual DVDs of the non-canon animated specials and short-lived TV series (The Indominus Escape, The Secret Exhibit, Double Trouble, and Legend of Isla Nublar).
