Skin Deep (1989) was recently released on Blu-ray by Mill Creek Entertainment. Read on to find out more about it...
[ SYNOPSIS ]
Hard-drinking novelist Zach Hutton (John Ritter) spirals out of control after his wife Alex (Alyson Reed) and mistress Angie (Denise Crosby) both leave him. Alone and crippled by a bad case of writer's block, Zach slips in and out of casual relationships and one-night stands, while his drinking becomes more and more severe. With the help of bartender Barney (Vincent Gardenia) and therapist Dr. Westford (Michael Kidd), Zach confronts his demons -- women and alcohol -- and rediscovers his writing voice.
[ QUICK THOUGHTS ]
Skin Deep is a film I had on VHS back in the early 1990s, and my interest in it at the time was for one thing and one thing only: to see Zap from American Gladiators nude. That would be bodybuilder Raye Hollitt, who plays fitness instructor Lonnie in the film. She would also appear in the Andy Sidaris film Day of the Warrior (1996). The rest of the film is excellent, too, if not a bit slow-paced. John Ritter does a great job playing a womanizer, in a role that was supposedly meant for Dudley Moore. He's supported by a great cast of men and women. Denise Crosby only appears at the beginning of the film in what is, essentially, a cameo, despite being on the movie poster. Director Blake Edwards keeps the naughtiness light and comical, a point that is accentuated by the film's memorable glow-in-the-dark condom scene.
