* NOTE: I have been having computer problems for the entire month of June, which caused me to fall behind in my review log. In an effort to quickly catch-up, I'm grouping them all together in this round-up of quick reviews.

65 (2023)
• BUY IT: 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD.
• SYNOPSIS: After a catastrophic crash on an unknown planet, pilot Mills (Adam Driver) quickly discovers he's actually stranded on Earth... 65 million years ago. Now, with only one chance at rescue, Mills and the only other survivor, Koa (Ariana Greenblatt), must make their way across an unknown terrain riddled with dangerous prehistoric creatures in an epic fight to survive.
• SPECIAL FEATURES:
- Deleted Scenes (8:03) - The five scenes are "Red Powder", "Look at Me", "Koa's Stick", "Mills builds a Fire", and "Mills Says Goodbye".
- Set in Stone: Filmmakers (4:21) - The filmmakers discuss what it took to make this movie.
- Future of Yesterday: Creating the World of 65 (4:56) - Looking at props, set pieces, and more.
- Primordial Planet (2:30) - A documentary-style look at the Earth of 65 million years ago.
- Final Showdown: Concepts to Screen (10:14) - A comparison between storyboards and final scenes.
• NOTES: Includes a digital copy code and an non-embossed slipcover, but no DVD copy. A fun popcorn thriller that fans of Jurassic Park will enjoy. Hard to believe that not too long ago, Ariana Greenblatt was the little, messy youngest sister of Jenna Ortega's character on the Disney Channel series Stuck in the Middle.

Creed III (2023)
• BUY IT: 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD.
• SYNOPSIS: After dominating the boxing world, Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) has been thriving in both his career and family life. When a childhood friend and former boxing prodigy, Damian (Jonathan Majors), resurfaces after serving a long sentence in prison, he is eager to prove that he deserves his shot in the ring. The face off between former friends is more than just a fight. To settle the score, Adonis must put his future on the line to battle Damian – a fighter who has nothing to lose.
• SPECIAL FEATURES: All extras are found on the Blu-ray disc only.
- Michael B. Jordan: In the Ring/Behind the Camera (10:04) - This featurette follows Jordan as he balances directorial duties with his lead role.
- There's No Enemy Like the Past: Donnie and Dame (9:20) - This featurette showcases the film's duties as both a sequel and an origin story.
- Deleted Scenes (4:23) - The three scenes include "Dame Steals Candy for Boy", "Amara School Hallway", and "Duke Talks to Adonis in Church".
• NOTES: I didn't care much for the second Creed film, but I think it's better than this third film. The film feels very by-the-numbers, and without the presence of Sylvester Stallone, I found it lacking even more. I think it's time to let Adonis hang up the gloves.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
• BUY IT: 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD.

- Forging the Forgotten Realms (8:07) - A discussion of the setting for the film.
- Broadswords, Battleaxes & Badass Brawls (8:40) - The making of some action scenes.
- Gag Reel (6:51)
- Deleted and Extended Scenes (10:35) - The six scenes are "Gorg's Arrival - Extended", "Ice Breaker - Extended", "Harassing Holga - Deleted", "Eating Ash - Extended", "Harper's Sanctuary - Extended", and "Corpse 6 - Extended".
• NOTES: You don't have to be a D&D fan to enjoy this fun fantasy film, but if you are, you'll get even more out of it. There's even a nice little reference to the 1980s animated series. By the way, the two previous Dungeons & Dragons movies from the 2000s are available on Blu-ray and DVD.

Evil Dead Rise (2023)
• BUY IT: 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD.
• SYNOPSIS: A twisted tale of two estranged sisters (Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland) whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.
• SPECIAL FEATURES: None.
• RATING: R for strong bloody horror violence, some language, and gore.
• NOTES: An Evil Dead film without Ash? Say it ain't so? It is, and it ain't that bad - though the unnecessary prologue and epilogue featuring characters unrelated to the main story ruins it a little bit. Besides, how many times can one guy get subjected to attacks from Deadites? Even Ash would say, "Just leave me alone already." If you're hankering for some Ash, check out my review of Ash vs. Evil Dead. FYI: Bruce Campbell has an uncredited voice cameo in the movie. In the first of the three records that Danny plays, Bruce can be heard saying, "Destroy it! It's called the Book of the Dead for a reason!"

National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)
• BUY IT: 4K UHD, 30th Anniversary Blu-ray, 20th Anniversary DVD.
• SYNOPSIS: Everything is planned, packed - and about to go hilariously wrong. The Griswolds are going on vacation. In the driver's seat is Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase), an Everyman eager to share the open road and the wonders of family togetherness. Myriad mishaps, crude kin (Randy Quaid), encounters with a temptress (Christie Brinkley), financial woes, Aunt Edna (Imogene Coca) on the roof, one security guard (John Candy) and 2,460 miles later, it's a wonder the Griswolds are together. There's never been a family vacation like it. Except maybe yours. And that helps explain why National Lampoon's Vacation remains so popular... and so very funny.
• SPECIAL FEATURES: Audio Commentary - with Chevy Chase, Randy Quaid, Matty Simmons, Harold Ramis, Anthony Michael Hall, and Dana Barron.
• RATING: R.
• NOTES: This has got to be one of the most perplexing releases from Warner Brothers I have ever seen. For the past few years, when a library title would be released on 4K, it would include a Blu-ray copy; usually a pre-existing old disc. The Blu-ray copy would carry the load of providing the special features, while the 4K disc would provide the movie only (and maybe a commentary). This new 4K release DOES NOT INCLUDE A BLU-RAY DISC. All you get is the 4K disc with just the commentary.
You lose out on the "Introduction by Chevy Chase, Randy Quaid and Matty Simmons", the 85-minute "Inside Story: National Lampoon's Vacation" documentary, and the "Theatrical Trailer" from the 30th Anniversary Blu-ray. The 20th Anniversary DVD from 2003 also include some "Family Truckster" featurettes that never got ported over to Blu-ray.
After Warners released Christmas Vacation on 4K (with a Blu-ray disc) last year (see my review), I hoped that eventually all four of the original films would get the 4K + Blu-ray treatment, which would allow me to replace my four-disc The Ultimate Vacation Collection Region-Free Blu-ray box set. Had this new release included a Blu-ray disc, specifically the 30th Anniversary Edition disc that is included in that box set, I would have been half-way towards replacing that set. Instead, I'm left holding onto that set, while also having separate 4K copies of the first and third films. Maybe the international arms of Warner Brothers will, eventually, release all four films in a nice region-free 4K + Blu-ray set. After all, it was Warner Brothers U.K. that released the four-film Blu-ray set; while Warner Brothers U.S. only released the four films individually.
So, with all of that said, I can only recommend this new 4K release to those who either don't care about extras, or who feel like they MUST have the film in 4K. For what it's worth, it does look good and is probably the best the film has ever looked on home video.

Shazam: Fury of the Gods (2023)
• BUY IT: 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD.
• SYNOPSIS: Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson (Asher Angel) and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. When the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy - aka Shazam (Zachary Levi) - and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world.
• SPECIAL FEATURES: The audio commentary is found on both discs, everything else is on the Blu-ray disc only.

- Mythology of Shazam! Fury of the Gods (4:59) - The director explains the reasons for using Greek mythological figures.
- Shazamily Reunion (5:01) - The cast talk about the excitement of getting back together.
- Deleted Scenes (31:06) - A total of 31 deleted scenes with an introduction by director David Sandberg.
• NOTES: My sister doesn't care much for superhero films, but she liked the first Shazam! film. She very much enjoyed this one, too, so that's a good indication that this is one of the better ones and is appropriate for all members of the family. FYI: The Annabelle doll, which made an appearance in the first film, does so again here. At the 6:04 mark, she's sitting at the table with the Raggedy Ann doll in the pediatrician's office. The real doll that Annabelle is based on is a possessed Raggedy Ann doll.

Do be aware that the series ends on a cliffhanger because it was canceled after the season had already finished filming. I'm happy to report that Mill Creek ported over nearly everything from the original DVD release. The only things missing are all of the "Previously On" episode recaps and a photo gallery.

Time Bandits (1981) (Criterion Collection)
• BUY IT: 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD.
• SYNOPSIS: In this fantastic voyage through time and space from Terry Gilliam, a boy named Kevin (Craig Warnock) escapes his gadget-obsessed parents to join a band of time travelers. Armed with a map stolen from the Supreme Being (Ralph Richardson), they plunder treasure from Napoleon (Ian Holm) and Agamemnon (Sean Connery)—but the Evil Genius (David Warner) is watching their every move. Featuring a darkly playful script by Gilliam and his Monty Python cohort Michael Palin (who also appears in the film), Time Bandits is at once a giddy fairy tale, a revisionist history lesson, and a satire of technology gone awry.
• SPECIAL FEATURES: The audio commentary is the only item on both discs. Everything else is on the Blu-ray disc only.
- Audio Commentary - with director Terry Gilliam, co-screenwriter and actors Michael Palin, John Cleese, David Warner, and Craig Warnock. It was recorded exclusively for Criterion in 1997.

Renfield (2023)
• BUY IT: Blu-ray, DVD.
• SYNOPSIS: For centuries, Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) has slavishly served Dracula (Nicolas Cage) by procuring his master's prey and doing his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, Renfield is ready to look for a new life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness, if only he can figure out how to end the toxic, co-dependent relationship...
• SPECIAL FEATURES: All of the content listed below can be found on both the Blu-ray and DVD discs.

- Fighting Dirty (6:12) - Stunt coordinator Christopher Brewster leads a look at the training, choreography, and careful execution that goes into the film's spectacular stunts and fight scenes.
- The Making of a Deleted Scene: Renfield's Dance! (3:34) - Nicholas Hoult and choreographer Kathryn Burns pull back the curtain on constructing an elaborate musical number for a fantasy dance sequence.
• NOTES: There's not much in the way of story here, but the film is a glorious gorefest popcorn flick which gives Nic Cage a chance to show off his iconic overacting skills. In many ways, it's the spiritual successor to his earlier film Vampire's Kiss. If you're on the fence about it, and you're a premium Peacock subscriber, give it a free watch there and then you can decide if you want to buy the disc or not. Many thanks to Universal for including this awesome Renfield t-shirt with my review copy of the disc.

Project: ALF (1996)
• BUY IT: Blu-ray, DVD.
• SYNOPSIS: After his series ended, our lovable extraterrestrial, ALF (Paul Fusco), is found living in captivity at Edmonds Air Force Base where the Alien Task Force has him under lock and key. It's commanding office, General Milfoil (Martin Sheen), is sick and tired of babysitting and plans on eliminating ALF under the guise of "a beauty treatment". When two Air Force scientists catch wind of this, they help ALF escape, hiding him at a cheap motel, not far from the Kitty Kat Lounge, a strip club. Of course, ALF assumes it's a restaurant that serves cats, and, well, you can guess what happens next. Meanwhile, ALF's advocates set up a press conference where they plan on revealing ALF's existence. General Milfoil concocts his own plan: set up an auction selling ALF to the highest bidder. Where will ALF end up?

• NOTES: When Liberation Hall released RoboCop: The Complete Series last year. I wasn't the only one to complain about the end result. They took 4:3 broadcast masters, cropped off the top and bottom, then enlarged what was left into 16:9. When word got out that the same company was going to release Project: ALF on Blu-ray, I wasn't the only one fearful that this 1996 TV movie would suffer the same result. In a rather unique circumstance, it does, and yet it doesn't. Yes, the aspect ratio has been changed from 1.33:1 to 1.78:1, but it isn't a simple crop job like with RoboCop.
A reviewer on Youtube compared the Blu-ray to an upload of the TV broadcast and based on his images, it appears that Liberation Hall did what other studios have done with TV shows and movies from the pre-2000s; such as Friends, Charmed, V: The Original Mini-Series on DVD and Blu-ray, and V: The Final Battle on DVD (the Blu-ray is 1.33:1). They went back to the original film source and re-framed the image from 1.33:1 to 1.78:1. The re-framed image loses information at the top and bottom, but it gains some on the left and right when compared to what was originally shown on TV. That's better than what could have been, but it's still not the ideal situation. As you can see in the Blu-ray screenshots below, there are many shots that now look really cramped, with the tops of heads frequently being cut off. (Click on each for the full-size 1920x1080 frame.)
Just like RoboCop's end credits, there is a shot in the film that is properly presented in the film's original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. (Technically, this shot is 1.42:1, but it's still a lot closer to the OAR than the rest of the film.) This is how the whole film should have looked.
Project: ALF was previously released on DVD in 2005 by Video Service Corp. (VSC). While I do not own that disc, and is it out of print now (and thus highly-priced on the aftermarket), I would bet that the film is presented in the original 4:3 fullscreen format on it. Looking at the details on the front and back DVD covers, it seems that the Paul Fusco interview/audio commentary on the Blu-ray originated on this DVD.
So, where does that leave us? Unfortunately, not in the best position. While Liberation Hall's new Blu-ray looks leaps and bounds better than their RoboCop Blu-ray, because it was sourced from a film print and not a broadcast TV master, the film is still cropped and not presented in the proper aspect ratio. I really thought we were passed all this cropping nonsense when we moved from VHS to widescreen DVD. If you can afford the VSC DVD, don't mind the film being on DVD, and losing out on the photo gallery, that would seem to be the best option. If the current aftermarket price for the VSC DVD is too high, at least the Blu-ray has fantastic picture quality and isn't too badly cropped.
On a side note... If the folks at Liberation Hall read this, and you guys intend on releasing more 4:3 TV content on Blu-ray, PLEASE present it in the original 4:3 aspect ratio. No more cropping or re-framing, okay? The people who buy your Blu-ray products are videophiles like myself who care about original aspect ratio. We're not like the mainstream consumers who don't even buy physical discs anymore. Please tailor your products to those of us who would buy them, not those who don't. Thanks.
UPDATE 7/3/2023 - I received an e-mail from Arny Schorr, the President/COO of Liberation Hall, and sister labels S'more Entertainment and RockBeat Records. He kindly provided some insight into the situation regarding this release. The short version is that the copyright owner of Project: ALF (presumably Fusco Entertainment) is the one who did the re-framing job, and Liberation Hall simply used the materials they were given. Fair enough. At least the quality of the Blu-ray is FANTASTIC and the amount of picture lost at the top and the bottom isn't too extreme. Given the low price point, I can certainly recommend it.
UPDATE - Just a few months after this review was written, Shout Factory released the ALF: The Complete Series (Deluxe Edition) DVD set, which contains the Project ALF movie (I don't know if it's 4:3 or 16:9), as well as the original series in an (almost) unedited form, plus both animated series. You might still need The ALF Files Canadian DVD (listed below) for the unedited "Try to Remember" episode. I still need to really dig into the set, but I think that with this set, a lot of what I originally wrote below is no longer relevant.
As for the rest of the ALF franchise... The original 1986-1990 TV series was only released in North America on EDITED (syndicated cuts) DVDs from Lionsgate in a Complete Series Set (3D Packaging), a Canadian Complete Series Set, and four individual seasons: Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, and Season 4.
From what I've read, all four seasons and the complete series were released uncut on DVD in Germany, though I'm not sure what region the discs are coding for (they may not play in U.S. players). There is also a Spanish set, but I can't find any information about it.
I personally own The ALF Files DVD, which is a Canadian release (playable in U.S. players) containing the episodes "Try To Remember", "ALF's Special Christmas", and "Tonight, Tonight". I believe that they are all uncut, which would make them preferably to the same episodes appearing on the Season/Series sets.
ALF also appeared on TV in animated form Saturday mornings on NBC. Only a few episodes of those series are available on DVD: Alf Tales: Alf and the Beanstalk and Alf Animated Adventures: 20,000 Years In Driving School. I bet you had no idea there was this much ALF on home video... and that's not counting plush dolls, figures, and other stuff :-)
AFTERTHOUGHT: If you never grew up with ALF and want to know what he's all about, you can watch the original series, this Project: ALF movie, and the ALF Tales animated series for free on Tubi. Project: ALF is even presented in the original 1.33:1 (4:3) aspect ratio, though it's from a poorer quality transfer than this Blu-ray, so don't use it to judge the picture quality.
