Neca $6.99 Superhero Blind Bag Unboxing Review
By Paul Rudoff on Feb. 14, 2019 at 11:50 PM in Mystery/Blind Bags
I've written about many repack mystery boxes/blind bags already, but this time it's a little different. Instead of coming from a third-party who bought overstock and are reselling it in themed blind packs, this time it's the manufacturer themselves reselling their overstock. This past Monday (February 11, 2019), I bought two of Neca's Superhero Blind Bags for $6.99 each in Target. Apparently they're a Target-exclusive. Was my $14 well spent? Read on to find out...
The bag proclaims that it contains "over $20 worth of toys and collectibles". Let's rip open the first bag and see if that's true.
• Phunny-Brand 8" Zombie Bart Simpson Plush
• Scalers Adventure Time Jake Clip-On Figure
• Avengers: Age of Ultron Dog Tag & Ball Chain (1 per pack)
• Batman v. Superman Hub Snaps (2 per pack)
Well, well, well. I could tell from feeling each bag that each would contain a plush of some sort. What I couldn't tell was that it would be Bart Simpson. If he were dressed as Fallout Boy, then it would be on-theme, but what does a zombie Bart Simpson have to do with superheroes? The same for the Adventure Time Jake clip-on. The package was clearly labelled, in several places, as containing "superhero" items! I don't have anything against these items - I'm kinda digging the zombie Bart plush - but this is clearly false advertising. At least the Avengers: Age of Ultron dog tag pack and the Batman v. Superman hub snaps pack fit the theme.
• Phunny-Brand 8" Batman v. Superman Armored Batman Plush
• Scalers Terminator Genisys T-800 Clip-On Figure
The Batman plush is nice, and definitely on-theme. I can't say the same for the Terminator clip-on, though I do like it. These two items were all that was in this bag. There were no additional small packs, like in the first bag. I feel like I got ripped off here.
The 8" Phunny plushes originally retailed for $11.99 each, and the Scalers go for $4.99 each. That's a total of $16.98. Hardly even $20, much less over $20. The first bag can add in the value of the two small packs (likely $3.99 each) to bring it over $20, but that can't be done for the second bag which only had the plush and Scaler.
I looked over a bunch of other reviews online (listed below), and a LOT of other people also got Zombie Simpsons plushes, either Bart, Lisa, Maggie, or Marge. What, no Homer? Some also got the same Armored Batman plush. A few got The Joker or Harley Quinn plushes, but for most it was Zombie Simpsons. So, it looks like it was no fluke that these "superhero" bags contain these non-superhero items.
Besides a Phunny 8" Plush, each bag is guarantee to contain one Scalers clip-on figure, too. ManifestPresents got two Ghostbusters Terror Dog Scalers (lucky him), but most everyone else actually got a superhero-related Scaler. I guess my two bags were the oddities. In fact, Nerdy Newb and Ohello Rodney both got ALL superhero items in their bags, which proves that at least some of these bags are on-theme.
Interestingly, EVERYONE else got the two small packs in all of their bags, which means that my second bag was definitely missing them. I'm going to have to e-mail Neca to see if they'll remedy that.
All in all, I was disappointed by these two blind bags. Only half of the items in each bag was superhero-related; and the second bag was definitely missing stuff. Seeing how other reviewers got Zombie Simpsons, too, if I were to buy more bags, it's highly likely that they'll be in there, too. If you like Zombie Simpsons plushes, then these blind bags are definitely worth the price.
Here are the other reviews. All are video reviews, except for the last, which is just photos: ManifestPresents, Front Row Negative, Nerdy Newb, Raphael Cejaman, Ohello Rodney, and SpasticPlastic.
[UPDATE - 2/22/2019]
Although I never received an e-mail from anyone at Neca, I received a surprise package from them in the mail today. It wasn't a blind bag, per se, but it was appropriate items from one that makes up for the inadequacies of the bags I received. Inside was the following:
• Scalers Captain America Clip-On Figure
• Scalers Ultron Clip-On Figure
• Avengers: Age of Ultron Dog Tag & Ball Chain (1 per pack)
• DC Series 1 Hub Snaps (2 per pack)
And here's a look at said items.
I thank the folks at Neca for helping to remedy the issues I had with the blind bags.
[UPDATE - 5/6/2019]
Rosie reported in the comments that as of March 31, 2019 (about a month and a half after my purchase/review), the price of the bags increased to $9.99. Today (May 6th), I finally saw these higher priced bags in my local Target. Not only did the price increase by $3, but the stated value of the contents increased from $20 to $25. I don't know if Neca included more stuff inside, or what the justification is for the increase in value. If you buy one of these $9.99 bags, please let us know in the comments what's inside.

[UPDATE - 7/9/2020]
