Neca $9.99 Pop Culture Blind Bag Unboxing Review
By Paul Rudoff on Aug. 30, 2020 at 12:00 PM in Mystery/Blind Bags
I've written about many repack mystery boxes/blind bags already, including several of Neca's themed blind bags. I recently found in my local Target a bunch of new themed blind bags from Neca. I bought each of them so that I could give you all an idea as to what you'll find in them. Read on to find out what's inside the POP CULTURE BLIND BAG...
Before I get to the bag contents, I'm going to do a bit of a spoiler and tell you that every one of these $9.99 Neca blind bags contains (mostly) Loot Crate leftovers. If you're unfamiliar with Loot Crate, it's a "mystery box" subscription service. Every month you get a box of random items based upon a particular theme or subject. It's kinda like a "deluxe" version of what these blind bags are. All of the stuff that Loot Crate has left over after years of reusing them in their various themed-boxes has to go somewhere... and these Neca blinds bags are where they end up. However, the items may not include the original packaging. There are many items I've found in these bags without their outer box and inner packaging materials. I really wish Neca would stop throwing out parts of the product, especially because the outer box tells you exactly what the product is - and that's not always easy to figure out without it. Yes, I realize that they do it so they can fit certain items into these blind bags, but to me, that makes some of these items "incomplete".
The bag proclaims that it contains "over $25 worth of toys and collectibles". It's hard to say if that's true or not because none of these items were ever sold separately. They were all sold as part of a collection. Sure, eBay resellers have them listed separately, but those prices are made up by each seller, and are not consistent with each other. The same item could be listed for $5 from one seller, and $25 from another. Honestly, the value of any item is what someone is willing to pay for it, so these items are worth $9.99 and nothing more. If you can resell them on eBay and get more than $9.99 for them in total, then good for you!
Unlike the two previous new themed bags, I actually bought more than one of the Pop Culture Blind Bag. I bought THREE of them! I'm not going to cover them with separate reviews. Instead, I'll break this one review up into THREE PAGES, which each bag on its own page. (There will be page links at the bottom of each page.) The reason I bought three bags, instead of just one, is because I had a hunch that I would like what was inside this specific bag. The 1980s-style bag artwork gave me an idea as to what particular 1980s movie I might find collectibles for. Let's see if my hunch was correct.
##### BAG #1 OF 3 #####
• Lootwear Ghostbusters Crew Socks
• Kidrobot The Simpsons 25th Anniversary Squishee Keychain
• Loot Crate Bumblebee Movie Pin Set
• Loot Crate Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Magnet Set
• Loot Crate Flophouse Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers T-Shirt
Well, look at that! Unlike the other bags that only contained four items, this one contains FIVE! That's a value of $2.00 per item. An absolute steal for these items.
I'm glad that my hunch was correct. I was expecting to find some Ghostbusters merch inside, and sure enough, here is a pair of slime and caution-striped pattern socks with the No Ghost Logo at the top. The socks were made by Loot Crate were from the October 2017 box, as mentioned on the Spook Central Facebook page.
This small 1.25" "Squishee" keychain, sealed in a red blind bag, is part of Kidrobot's "The Simpsons 25th Anniversary Keychain Series" (released in 2017). It's missing the outer box, probably because they couldn't fit it in the bag with everything else, even though it's really small. While the "donut" keychain from this series was inappropriate to find in the Gamer Blind Bag, it's perfectly fine to find one here. See, that's the thing about the Pop Culture Blind Bag. It's the perfect place to put the items that don't belong in the Superhero, Gamer, and Sci-Fi & Horror bags. It's a great "catch all".
This set of three pins from Loot Crate are based on the Bumblebee movie from 2018, which I reviewed here. One pin is Bumblebee in his Volkswagon Beetle form, another in his robot form, and the third is the Autobots logo with a comet trail behind it. They are all attached to a 5"x3" card that looks like a boombox on the front.
I instantly recognized this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles magnet set from Loot Crate's Best of The 80's Box, which I purchased for $20 in Walmart a year or two ago. The magnets would be nice, if I didn't already have them. As you can see in the photo, it's four magnets - one for each turtle - on a 7.5"x3" backing card. It carries a 2018 copyright date.
The final item in the box is a big one. This Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers t-shirt from Loot Crate & Flophouse, which carries a 2015 copyright date, is a size Medium (which I can fit into, although not comfortably). It features a split between the Green and White Rangers - at least, I think that's what the design is supposed to be. I'm not a big Power Rangers fan, so if there's a deeper meaning to it, then I don't know.
Overall, much better than the Superhero, Gamer, and Sci-Fi & Horror bags. Let's go to the next page and see if the second bag is just as good as this one.
